Buddha and Beyond?
No one has ever commented directly upon that essay, and I know why. Everyone who reads it agrees,... or no one reads it. Anyway, in the bathtub I got to pondering humanity’s problem (where else better?), and felt that we certainly don’t need another Sage, Christ, Buddha, Lao Tzu, etc. After all, exterminate the sage, discard the wise, and the people will benefit a hundredfold… We need, as individuals, to accept who we are, rather than futilely aim for who we think we should be. Sooner or later each of us must realize this simply doesn’t work (although we usually seem to die before that happens). Without a foundation of self understand and acceptance, everything we do will have unforeseen consequences. Alas, being a social species and loving our movie stars, kings and other heroes, I guess another ‘prophet / sage’ awaits us in the wings. ![]()

Thank you.
My little Buddhist sangha is always getting caught up in thoughts about how to be a good person and how to help other less fortunate people.
Does it make sense to teach Buddhist principles to people who are fighting to survive? Do we tell them to accept reality, to love what is?
My answer is that there will always be pain in the world, but with acceptance of what is, there need not be suffering. When we cling to our desires, we suffer. If we can let go of our desires, then we are left with pain, which is temporary like everything else and eventually will be balanced out with joy.
